We’re excited to announce the residency program of “Media Cartographies: From Data to Perception”, promoted by Re:humanism in collaboration with Liminal Space – La Casa delle Arti Transmediali, NABA – Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, and RUFA – Rome University of Fine Arts, with the support of the Ministero della Cultura and SIAE as part of the “Per Chi Crea” programme.
Starting on October 5, 2026, the project enters its production phase, following the training program held between June and July and a subsequent period of individual mentoring.
“Media Cartographies” is a research, training, and production platform dedicated to the transformations generated by contemporary technological systems, and to how algorithms, artificial intelligence, data, digital infrastructures, and immersive environments shape our perception of reality. At the centre of the project is the concept of the “map”, understood as a critical and sensitive device through which to interpret a present shaped by continuous flows of information, images, and data.
The six selected artists and collectives will develop their research through a series of one-week residencies at Liminal Space in Rome, working with the project’s curatorial and technical team. The residency phase will transform their research into new installations, performances, audiovisual works, and interactive environments. Each residency will also include two days of Open Studio, giving the public opportunities to encounter the artists’ processes, experiments, and works in progress.
The program will open with Tommaso Cherubini and Lorenzo Ciccarelli, in residence from October 5 to 11, with Open Studio on October 9 and 10. Their project, “MEDIAMORPHOSIS”, is an immersive audiovisual installation exploring the transformation of scientific communication as a media ecosystem. Through archives, datasets, and dynamic visualisations, the work follows the passage of knowledge from traditional educational contexts to contemporary digital platforms.
From November 2 to 8, Giacomo Baccega will develop “Circe’s Trick: Seeking Topographic Amnesia II”. Drawing on the myth of Circe, the project explores the role of images in constructing contemporary reality. Combining a video essay with an interactive installation, it investigates the image both as a tool for orientation and as a possible device of oblivion.
From November 23 to 29, Gabriele Barbagallo and Sofia Salerno will work on “Sguardi dal cielo”. Through a performance in a natural environment, the artists investigate the drone as an ambiguous figure suspended between playful device and surveillance tool. The project explores how technological vision can actively influence bodies and the perception of space.
From December 14 to 20, Livia Ribichini will develop “Sensing Rome”, a project based on a series of journeys through the city and the collection of biometric data related to her bodily experience. These data will be translated into a dynamic map and an immersive light installation, proposing a situated geography in which perception, emotion, body, and territory become interconnected.
The new year will see Lucrezia Della Balda in residence from January 11 to 17, 2027, with “Πρόθεσις”, an acousmatic concert and sculptural installation investigating the voice as a material to be reconstructed and transformed. Through artificial intelligence, the project imagines a possible re-emergence of the lost voice of Greek tragedy, giving form to an artificial and androgynous chorus.
The program will conclude with Martina Carbone, in residence from February 8 to 14, with Open Studio on February 12 and 13. In “Cartographies of Pre-Mediation”, the artist reflects on the conditions of visibility in the computational age through a performance using open-source astronomical data and real-time processing systems to generate variable constellations influenced by the presence of the audience.
Together, the six projects form a constellation of different artistic approaches addressing some of the central questions of “Media Cartographies”: the relationship between image and reality, the translation of data into sensory experience, the role of artificial intelligence, contemporary forms of surveillance, the computational processes that determine visibility, and the transformation of knowledge within media ecosystems.
The residency program represents the productive core of “Media Cartographies”, where the concept of cartography becomes artistic practice and a tool for exploring the ways in which we observe, interpret, and share reality today.
